Karl is an opportunist. He did a very good job of staging his announcement to make it look like he is the annoited one for the open seat, but he did some sketchy stuff behind the scenes to get his endorsements that rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. I'm a member of FCDC and have noticed that, while Karl has the support of party leaders and a bunch of random "always online" Dems, a lot of people who "love Karl" don't actually live in the district he is running to represent. And what matters at the end of the day isn't endorsements but how many of his supporters he can get out to vote in the special election. Holly Seibold has kids in Vienna schools and is very involved in the community through her kids, not to mention BRAWS. If she can get her people out knocking doors for her, she could win. This has happened in special elections before, where the one w/the endorsements loses because another candidate has more connections in the community. Ibrahim Samirah won his first special election by not wasting his time cowtowing to the Democratic establishment, but instead by getting his people out to vote. Holly can do the same thing.
Is Seibold a normal, old school moderste democrat? We need more of those.
Seibold should have a lot of ammunition to point out Frisch’s failures in his current position. Frisch let his own self-interests (or more precisely his husband’s) dictate his decisions over closing FCPS for an extended period during Covid. Frisch has a lot of constituents zoned for McLean High, and has done little to address the impact of Tysons growth on the school’s enrollment (other than to pretend that the relocation of a cheap, second-hand modular to the school grounds was a major coup, even when less crowded schools like Justice and Madison are getting beautiful, permanent additions). Frisch’s boondoggle at Dunn Loring will deprive Fairfax/Oakton residents of a new elementary school, require major, unnecessary boundary changes at a host of elementary schools in Vienna like Stenwood and Freedom Hill in a few years, and complicate future plans to build a new ES where the new housing is getting built in Tysons (which will compromise the county’s efforts to make Tysons a livable community with its own community amenities). All because he wanted to curry favor with his friends who wanted to preserve a dog park at Blake Lane. Frisch’s conduct in connection with the TJ admissions changes led several of his Democratic colleagues on the School Board, including Stella Pekarsky, to refer to him in private texts as an untrustworthy liar. He shouldn’t hold any public office, much less get elevated to the House of Delegates.
