Something that has always bothered me about Miami (OH) is that fraternities are allowed to have "houses" but sororities just have suites in the dorms. I've never even been interested in Greek life, but that double standard is really horrible (and I don't understand why it hasn't been legally challenged?)
From my limited understanding: Sororities have off-campus houses just not formally identified on-campus houses. Sororities often don't give parties for safety reasons--and also so they don't have to purchase the same liability insurance. At Miami, I think it's not what is 'allowed' but rather what they have -- the national fraternal organizations are the ones who own the off-campus houses and the fraternity members pay dues to live in them. But I agree it's a weird vibe.
