[/quote] My public school kid doesn't sit at a desk all day memorizing stuff. (Honestly, I wish they'd have to memorize a little more.) She has plenty of activities in pairs or groups, class discussion, things that require moving around, and the desk work tends to be practicing math problems, which is necessary to learn math, or writing assignments in ELA.
