I’d look at Old Town Alexandria near the King Street metro. There are some nice hotels a block or two away from the Metro and a free shuttle that runs up and down King Street. Charming area with lots of restaurants and a short metro ride to downtown DC.
No reason to stay that far out. Stay in the city sine that is where they want to go. 21 year olds are not looking for charming.
It’s better than Arlington, and have any of you actually stayed in a hotel downtown recently? I no longer live in the DC area, but I come to town fairly frequently, and the last time I stayed downtown it was *dead* at night. Union Station is a freakishly deserted homeless camp. I started staying in Old Town, because there are at least people out and about and the restaurants are busy.
PP again — perfect example — I see people are recommending the Capitol Hill Hotel, and while it is well located for the tourist sights on the Hill, I would not recommend it for young people. I was there a few weeks ago and took my DC for a walk around Capitol Hill before a Nats game, and there was no one around on that street. Restaurants that used to be packed were empty (if not closed down). If you really want to stay in DC proper, City Center is a better recommendation.
