My husband got salmonella from bagged pistachios a few years back.  I researched it in that case.  Pistachios take an enormous amount of water to grow (there are pistachio water wars in California).  If the salmonella is in the water, the product may get it.  In the case of Jif, here's what the company is saying "ConAgra officials blamed moisture from a leaky roof and a malfunctioning sprinkler system for helping salmonella bacteria grow on raw peanuts."  I still think if it's in the water when they grow or cook the peanut butter, you can get it that way.[/quote]
