Pistachios take an enormous amount of water to grow (there are pistachio water wars in California). If the salmonella is in the water, the product may get it. In the case of Jif, here's what the company is saying "ConAgra officials blamed moisture from a leaky roof and a malfunctioning sprinkler system for helping salmonella bacteria grow on raw peanuts."
