This is just for one year, and the OP isn't asking the school to make some significant change - they are asking to call the kid a different name. This could be the case for any kid, not just a kid changing their gender identity. A kid named Samantha may decide they want to go by Sam, or a kid named Christopher may decide they want to go by Chris, a Daniel may want to go by Danny, John's go by Jack, etc. Maybe someone decides they prefer their middle name. Doesn't have to be about gender - it's just using the name they prefer, like we all do for the people in our lives, every day. As for the previous comment about having to stay on top of "bespoke pronouns" - I'm kinda old, and when I was a kid, some people got all out of sorts about women going by Ms. instead of Mrs. or Miss. Just call someone what they want to be called and get over it.
Come now. OP doesn’t say how long her child was at the school - but it is hard for people to switch names etc and expect everyone jumps on board with calling the new name when they have called their person “Julie” for 3 years. The best advice is the most honest - wait until 8th grade is over and start new at high school. So much easier. OP child is in for a world of disappointment - not because people want to hurt her child - but because our minds go to familiar and her new name will be a tough change I. 9 short months of school.
