It's actually very hard for a four year old to smell from being "unwashed." Four year olds don't stink the same way adults do from sweat, etc. Are you sure it's not from cooking smells or from cigarette smoke or the parent's perfume? Or your child is just being dramatic and/or repeating what someone else says?
As the parent of a 5yr old in pre-k who happens to have a very sensitive nose, the smells that bother my kid are food smells. He sits at the very end of the table away from us at dinner when I make certain foods or else he starts reching. He is a very happy, low drama kid otherwise, so we know he genuinely can’t control it. As a parent of 2 young boys, kids that age can smell. Some kids insist on wearing the same clothes many days in a row. 4/5 is an age where they get self conscious and don’t want help getting dressed or wiping in the bathroom - but still may need help wiping or selecting clean clothes. Kids may also smell like a pet or cigarette smoke. I have a friend whose elderly cat pees in her kids’ laundry/drawers/hamper every chance it gets. Also some kids use hair products with a distinct smell. No matter what the smell is, the teacher should know. It is very possible that is not noticeable from an adult’s height may be much stronger to same height peers.
