Most European countries have a passive form of enforcement in the form of a national ID. E.g, in Germany, without a national ID, one cannot - rent an apartment enroll child for school apply for a job buy train ticket open bank account vote These are just the ones I can think of right now, I'm sure there are more prohibitions. For this reason illegal migration into Germany is not really viable. In China years ago I me some folks who said that it's easy to get into America. As a Chinese person myself, I was getting unvarnished insider opinion. A lot of people world over treat America's borders as a revolving door.
Yes, I work in the middle east frequently. You cannot buy a mobile phone or get cable installed without a national ID number assigned by immigration. No car, no utility hook ups, no internet access outside of hotels. The US is the ONLY country in the world that does not think that borders mean anything. Try working in the UK without appropriate documentation, or France.
