I read that close to fifty percent of the undergrads at Rice come from Texas. That is a huge number for a private university - almost like a state uni (I realize not in Texas where 90% of undergrads are from thanks but closer to Michigan). I’d view that as a negative (no shade on Texans specifically, but the lack of geographic diversity).
From the Rice website: https://admission.rice.edu/apply/class-profile 13% of students come from outside the United States 50% come from outside of Texas 37% come from Texas It's worth noting that Texas is diverse in many ways -- race and ethnicity, SES, political views (with Rice students leaning pretty strongly left). My son is a recent Rice grad. His closest friends come from CA, WA, TX, TN and GA. They're now in grad school (med, law, engineering, music and business) or working (engineering, consulting, music performance) in: IL, CA, WDC, NY, PA, MA and TX. For our WDC born and bred DS it was great to go to a school that's not East Coast-centric.
