Parents should be made aware of what happened the day it happens. Who cares if the details aren't all ironed out - at least give a brief overview. "A student was attacked. The attacker has been suspended. The investigation continues." I don't care who did it or where it happened or why it may have happened... I just want to know IT DID HAPPEN! Also, the person who attacks should be kicked out of school. No in-person for them.
This is why we need the Clery Act for K-12 schools: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clery_Act Universities were notorious for covering up crimes on campus to make the school look good. This forced them to report them, basically the day they happened.
Are schools not required to report crime now? I didn't know that. Thank you for the link.
K-12 schools are not required to report crimes on campus. We're in MCPS and a few years ago, there was an alleged gang rape of a student in the bathroom, during school hours. The public learned about it only after the police department (who is very good about reporting on incidents) announced it, and then MCPS scrambled to get a letter out to angry parents who learned about it from the news.
