While waiting for my number to be called at the deli I randomly saw this jar of boar's head "sweet vidalia onions in sauce." Low calorie and low sodium, so I figured why not. It is absolutely fantastic on a sandwich. And then this week I bought a different brand's "onion jam," which lacks the chunks of onion that boar's head has, but similar concept and flavor. It is also fantastic. If your family is sort of bored by deli sandwiches, even when using bakery bread, high-quality meats and cheeses, I highly recommend grabbing a jar of onions. They're only like 5 bucks. I personally can't stand raw onions on a sandwich, too overpowering, but love the depth these products add. Sorry if I'm way late on this. It's possible this stuff has been popular for years.
I have tried both. I think I like the Boar's Head better, it's sweeter and has a cleaner flavor. And I think I like the texture of the bigger pieces of (cooked) sweet onion, while onion jam doesn't really have much texture. But both are good.
