I work for FCPS and get to see “behind the scenes” of many schools. I would 100% send my kid to Lemon Road over Westgate.
What job has someone familiar with behind the scenes at many schools? Just curious. Sounds interesting.
I work in a central office instructional support role and agree, it’s very interesting and I love my job. All of the schools mentioned are good schools - like many DCUM discussions go, it’s easy to over analyze when on the whole there is a high bar set. From my lens, the culture at Westgate is one that is driven by test scores and ‘teaching to the test’ whereas Lemon Road places more energy on cultivating students’ citizenship and deep thinking skills. The teachers I’ve interacted with from Lemon Road seem to have more ownership over their approach to teaching and learning and craft opportunities that are more student-centered rather than curricula-centered, which results from the values of the leadership. I prefer this approach to education and would send my child to Lemon Road for this reason if given the choice.
Sure, your one day of interaction gave you that perspective, but your view is now outdated. Teachers come and go like the wind and there can be no expectation that a group of teachers one year will be like the next. If those teachers you spoke to moved to another school would you send them there instead of Lemon Road? Seriously, everyone focuses so much on giving the school building itself glowing reviews as if it's actually inherent that the school will always be good, and not the actual teachers who do the real teaching.
