American buttercream is made with butter, cream, powdered sugar, and flavorings (such as vanilla). It tends to be a bit sweeter than Italian buttercream or Swiss buttercream, which are more like meringues, or German buttercream, which has a custard base. FWIW, to me a cupcake is merely a frosting delivery vehicle.[/quote]
