I’ve been overseas for the past 14 years, including in Eastern Europe. It has been really depressing to see how many men do cheat when presented with the option. The scenarios I have seen most often is when the man’s job takes a family overseas and the wife becomes a “trailing spouse” who doesn’t work and becomes uniquely dependent on the husband for socialisation, etc, changing the dynamic of their relationship. Meanwhile, the husband is suddenly in a community where he is treated as more successful and handsome than he actually was considered at home, and scores of young, beautiful local women are throwing themselves at him, actively seeking an American man and prepared to break up his marriage to get him. OR the man arrives alone for a shorter assignment, with wife and kids back home, and succumbs to one of the young women this way. We estimated that about 75% of expat men cheat, either discretely or in a way that blows apart their marriage. So I’m assuming that this percentage reflects the approximate proportion of men who WOULD cheat if put into the similar circumstances.
This was the case in my marriage. I was a trailing spouse to my ex, little kids at home, very isolated, and he cheated. I would NEVER recommend this arrangement.
