The whole LOCI thing is absurd. They should just let you click a box that says "no I haven't decided to go anywhere else". Instead they make kids write a whole new "Why Michigan" essay that they aren't going to read carefully. It just puts the apps in a "take this student seriously" pile.
If I had to go through 60,000 applications (or whatever it is now) I’d want the additional info. If you can’t be bothered to write 250 words, you’re not really interested so yeah, you can go to the bottom of the pile.
+1
+ another 1
Agree with all of this, but from someone who applied RD?
If I'm too lazy to read the application the first time and want a kid to write another 250 words that will say what every other kid will say, then maybe i should find another job.
+1 I actually find this abhorrent. The kid works hard on the application, provides everything that is needed, and then school is like Waahhh, this is hard! So much to go through!! Ok, guys, now if you REALLY want to come, PAYING THE APPLICATION FEE and us telling you what hoops to jump through, we decided to add another-- please submit another assignment* *KNOWING that some students simply may not have the bandwidth for this. You talk about privilege--it's the most privileged who will be able to complete this step.
Have you ever applied for a good job? Welcome to the real world.
This is teenager, and some of difficult circumstances. Agree with other poster-- offer option of Essay or Refund. Why only the students have to stick to agreements? Btw, this is university funded by taxpayer money. (really, they all are)
