My DD applied (and got in) mostly because she had heard about it from other people and liked the online info sessions. Oh, and no supplemental essays was a bonus. It's not her first choice b/c she's heard from kids she knows who are there that it's not that fun. To me, that's not a bad thing. I love that there are no frats/sororities. There's definitely a herd mentality amongst kids that turns a school hot. You can complain about NE juicing up their rankings but the truth is that now they are attracting a very high caliber group of kids. I have to believe that by being in Boston they attract good profs as well.
For the record, the above bolded is not true. NEU does have Greek life. My DC graduated a few years ago and was in Greek life. Trust me...they went to plenty of parties. NEU does not have school owned/national chapter owned houses for the fraternities or sororities, but the members of these tend to rent houses that become their frat houses. NEU was a great experience for my DC! It's definitely not perfect, but show me a school that gets everything right! Overall, we were extremely happy with the education, especially the Coop program which speaks for itself. I have a kid at another school (higher ranked and supposedly more "prestigious") that doesn't have coops and they are feeling the frustration big time in trying to get internships! They saw their sibling score several interviews and job offers through the coop program with the help of a separate Coop Advisor and database of job listings. Meanwhile at the higher ranked school my kid can barely get the career center to guide them on their resume.
