Most people want police. But they want good police. They want police who are safe, and who don't treat them like second class citizens because of their race, income, or what part of town they live in. If we lose too many police, we will end up with vigilante justice like we just saw in a Frederick Burger King and a Winchester, VA rest stop. People stepping in to domestic violence fights and ending up shot (and in one case dead).
But the police unions have protected violent and unfit officers for too long. Being a police officer is hard, dangerous work dealing on a regular basis with both the crazy and the venal---people the rest of us reasonably want to be sheltered from. They are now being expected to have perfect judgment in every situation---no matter how chaotic the situation or how little time there is to make a split-second life or death decision. And then, after spending 2020 being treated with contempt by progressives, they watched the right-wing nutjob mob on January 6th (many of whom were also current or former LEOs) brutally attack the Capitol and DC police officers who were just there to do their jobs and saw the Republican politicians who try to claim the law & order mantle pretend that January 6th wasn't any big deal (even though only one person died - unarmed Ashley Babbit, shot in the neck by the Capitol police). Then---let's pivot back left---we have a DC city council, along with most big cities + California, that wants only to "catch and release" violent predators back into our communities. If you are a reasonable, middle of the road human who got into policing because you actually wanted to help people and be of service in your community---wanting to quit right now is entirely rational behavior.
