My sister’s house is huge, and appears pretty gross. They have a cleaner who come every two weeks I think, but it’s not enough. I think the root of the issue is they just have too much stuff, plus 4 kids who trail through giant house making undiscovered messes. Both she and Her husband have pack rat tendencies. It’s just too much space, and too much stuff to keep up with. It stresses me out to be there. Sometimes I play a game where I look around and try to figure out why a room seems messy. It’s usually things like a corner with all kinds of wrapping paper supplies piled up, a dresser with a half finished art project a kid started, broken knobs on the drawers nobody got around to fully fixing and some kid tried to tape with the wrapping paper, random socks in a corner. And that’s just the out of the way guest room that doesn’t get a lot of traffic! I think she’s hesitant to have cleaner come more often because it takes work to pick up for them, and the issue is really clutter (and the fact that clutter makes it hard to clean). Also, they are wealthy but frugal. It was better when they had a live-in nanny who cleaned, but still overwhelming.
