Can you invest in individual stocks through TSP? (Not a Fed, so not sure).
No, you can only invest in the G, S, F, C, & I funds, or one of the L (lifecycle) funds, which are just an target retirement date, evolving portfolio of the other 5 funds. They are not true mutual funds, they are technically trust funds administered by BlackRock Investments. But for our purposes, they are basically the same as mutual funds and each one except the G Fund tracks a major market index. The TSP millionnaires are, for the most part, those who rolled over large accounts from the private sector (which was smart, IMO, because you cannot beat the TSP's incredibly low costs anywhere!). Unfortunately, when I joined my agency, no one in HR mentioned that I could do a rollover of my old 401K, so I converted it into an IRA and it's done miserably and lost almost all its value over the years. I SO wish I had known to roll that money into the TSP; I would have so much more in my account now. :(
