Just heard from high schooler that what he has heard is the following: a group of JV football members called another kid the n-word while on the "learning stairs". Then other kids jumped to the black kid's defense. Not sure if this is true or just rumors.
Why did the school need to publish this incident and rile up the community? Seems the kids handled themselves well and the offender can face appropriate school discipline.
Because we need to shine light into the ugly corners in order to help people understand that this happens everywhere, even in "nice" schools, "nice" towns and "nice" families. Because I don't consider it "riling up the community" to get people aware and angry about abusive, racist language. Because there need to be consequences for choosing to act that way, beyond a quiet conference with your parents and the vice principal.
YES!! Well said.
What is the end goal? Is it to correct the child's behavior? If so, then using some discretion seems more likely to result in genuine regret, while naming-and-shaming seems more likely to result in perpetual resentment / ostracization. Is it so the victim (and perhaps others that feel victimized by proxy) feels a sense of vengeance? Does it matter if the perpetrator was also a person of color?
So with your logic all act of racism should be brushed under the rug so the perpetrator doesn't become resentful? You're worried that someone is going to become resentful because they are publicly held accountable for something they actually said? Public shame, especially if it might impact college prospects, will curtail negative behavior. How is it vengeance to not want black students to be subjected to racial slurs? Clearly quiet conferences aren't working but keep being an enabler by coddling bigots.
