FCPS is doing a MUCH better job in early elementary than APS- also they offer more electives in high school because they are bigger and can. APS has decided to go with a "blended learning model" in early elementary which means kids are on iPads a ton just when they should be reconnecting with peers in real life, not virtually. FCPS has stuck with real life teaching and not gone to the iPad model so it is now winning in the early grades as well as high school. For years, I wanted to live in Arlington for the schools, I am now so grateful that we live in Fairfax so my kids aren't relegated to 30+ minutes of iPad time a time and are receiving instruction and group work with real live people.
Arlington high schools are actually bigger than or comparable in size to most FFX County high schools. Lake Braddock 4,332 Robinson 3,810 Hayfield 3,139 Chantilly 2,936 Oakton 2743 West Potomac 2716 Westfield 2651 Centreville 2641 South Lakes 2549 Yorktown 2496 Washington-Liberty 2493 Wakefield 2490 Woodson 2427 West Springfield 2413 Herndon 2384 Justice 2378 McLean 2369 Fairfax 2366 James Madison 2289 South County 2241 Annandale 2218 Edison 2189 Marshall 2170 Falls Church 2068 Mount Vernon 2002 Langley 1992 TJ 1809 Lewis 1806
The difference is the campus and building for Fairfax schools are much larger. We are looking at 10am lunches for WL. They had to convert offices to classrooms. The school burns time and resources on basic logistics so it can’t offer as much courses or programs.
