I feel like there’s this unspoken and implicit assertion that if you marry a rich man, you have “won” and you are better than the women who weren’t as lucky to have garnered the romantic interest of a a wealthy man. I resent this implication and I have seen other women exhibit it openly and smugly.
This. I know a woman who was an insecure mess right up until she started dating a rich guy. Suddenly she felt validated and started acting much nicer towards people. Then they got engaged and married, and now she looks down her nose at everyone and brags constantly about their house, their vacations, meals at fancy restaurants, etc. The whole thing is tedious because watching it happen you can see that she was insecure before because she was single, then a rich guy "picked" her and she felt worthy, and now she thinks she's better than people who married less wealthy men or who are not married. I feel bad for her because it's so sad, but not enough that I won't avoid spending time with her whenever possible because she is so grating. What's amazing is that she's also very outspoken about being a feminist -- talking about choice and the pay gap and women getting equity. I agree with all that stuff but there are definitely times when I want to shake her and be like "look at your own damn house, girl -- this is NOT feminism." I think she's oblivious to it.
