There are lots of costs that go into performances that most people underestimate (rehearsals with paid faculty, studio space rental, costume fittings and rental, lighting design, special equipment, performance venue rental and promotion, facility maintenance and cleaning, etc.). These are all extra expenses on top of class tuition. Kids in the conservatory rehearse between 5-10 hours per week on top of classes. That extra time in the studio and on stage comes at a cost.
