I’m not a dog person at all, even though I have 2 dogs and have actually worked as a dog walker. The dogs were really for the kids, they mostly drive me crazy. The funny thing is I actually love all other animals. I’ve always been fascinated by wildlife, I actually majored in zoology and spent several years working with wildlife. But dogs are so UGH. I think because they’re always demanding attention, barking, and misbehaving, vs a squirrel or a bird that just goes on living it’s life. And most of all I hate the commitment. Walks every day, can’t stay out for more than a few hours because they need to be let out, always barking at people outside which is annoying AF, my whole life seems to revolve around the dumb dogs.
The commitment to walks and needing to go out to relieve themselves I'll give you, but the bolded is an owner problem. I've trained my dog from 8 weeks to be well-behaved and recently certified as a therapy dog and she does none of that. It takes a lot of work though to get there that some people just are not down for. Also, some breeds are more predisposed to this shitty behavior but either way, still a people problem 90% of the time.
We’ve trained our dog since puppyhood and she’s still wild. On walks, she gets so excited when she sees other dogs that she jumps 5 feet in the air and barks. She can’t be let in backyards because she’ll run wild, tearing everything up and barking. I love walking, but walks aren’t enjoyable for me at all anymore because she literally does not care I’m there. She’s seriously the most ADHD dog ever, spends the whole walk jumping around and chasing everything. We’ve tried punishment, we’ve tried treats, doesn’t care about any of it. I’m not a fan of shock collars but I’m seriously considering training her with one because I don’t know how else to get her to focus. It’s bad enough that the only way to get her to calm down is to grab her collar hard and yell, I know people judge me. And that doesn’t even prevent the bad behavior, she still does it just as much, it’s just the only way to stop it. It was even that way in puppy class, we did a punishment based puppy class when positive reinforcement wasn’t working, the trainer literally yelled at her and smacked her the entire time and it did nothing to stop the barking and jumping at other dogs. We’ve done classes, hired trainers, had strict rules from Day 1. I just think she’s not meant to be a pet dog, she’s a labradoodle and I think has strong genes to be a hunting dog. My kids would be devastated if we re-homed her, but I feel like I’m just counting down the days until she dies and I can have a peaceful live again.
