It's a hobby, OP. The costs are sunk. If it keeps him out of trouble, why not? I would have difficulty countenancing repairing such a polluting, unsafe vehicle, but if he's very emotionally attached to it, and would be wasting his time on stupid things no matter what, then why not this?
He's always managing to find trouble. Someone who commented earlier about chasing skirts is not far off. I love him but want him to grow up.
That's a toxic attitude. There are things that men do that women roll their eyes at, and there are things that women do that men have the same reaction with. Men mature later during the first 40 years of their life than women. This is biology, nothing is broken, nothing for you to fix. Men are biologically predisposed to find and fix problems using their hands. Again, nothing is wrong with this, there is nothing to fix. What you can do is to make sure his hobby does not interfere with his responsibilities to provide and protect, the family's finances, and your normal needs for his time and attention. Beyond that, it's irrational to criticize him for doing something that he enjoys and takes pride in. If you keep doing this or escalate an otherwise benign situation, it will lead to resentment, breakdown in communications, and sour your relationship.
