The only times I went to a no gift party and I followed the rules, everyone else had brought a gift.
People say this all the time, and I just don't believe it. Were you the first guest there and were you really observing everyone who arrived? I have thrown and attended no-gift parties, and while there are always some guests who arrive with gifts, either because they didn't read the invitation or because of some self-righteous "I decide when I give someone a gift bs," it's never everyone.
This post made me think - what if the party host invited one (or more) people whom they KNOW simply cannot afford to bring a gift, so in an effort to ensure the person can participate without any embarrassment, they declare the party “no gifts!” - great! Problem solved, everyone can enjoy and no one loses face! But then a bunch of the other guests take it upon themselves to just bring a gift anyway… now that person feels crappy and embarrassed. I’m sure thatnot what all of you who insist in going against the host’s stated wishes intend to happen, but it may be something you should consider.
