Agree that low pay, low respect and high risk are the problem here. Flexible schedules and so forth don’t really work with law enforcement but that’s not the recruitment issue. Anyone that thinks this is a Detroit problem is delusional. The LEO agencies around here are desperate to recruit and can’t fill their academy classes. I think communities of color need to do a real recruitment effort to get the right kind of candidates into the academies. It would take a real mind shift and an effort by ministers, civil rights leaders, and other community leaders.
The “low pay and high risk” has ALWAYS been a perfect of police work; what’s new is: - lack of respect after 2016 and again in 2020, and - threat of politically-motivated prosecutors jailing police for doing their jobs.
Other places have opening now that pay more. If you have the ability to be a police officer, there are probably better opportunities out there for you. You feel it's just a lack of respect. If they increase that pay, you'll get those people.
