We need more part time options. With benefits and good pay. People are tired of working 40-50 hours per week. They want to work, but isn’t 20-30 hours reasonable? Even better, we need universal healthcare. Let’s promote entrepreneurship and risk taking without the fear of getting sick and losing everything. I’m interested to see how this Great Resignation will pan out. I hope that workers become more powerful and less beholden to the Almighty Employer.
So what kind of business do you own that employs people part time with benefits and good pay? How many employees? Are your employees able to support their family of 5 by working 20-30 hours/week for you?
Thanks for sking! I work for myself and have zero employees because I started this venture during COVID and I’m seeing how it goes. if I wind up hiring, I will damn sure pay well because I want good people working for me and I want them to stick around for a while. Health insurance is crazy expensive, as we all know; I propose completely overhauling the current system and providing federal, universal access to healthcare for everyone (easier said than done!). Then people will be able to have more say over their lives and their time. Employers can get out of the health insurance game and can offer new and different benefits and will be able to attract a wider pool of employees. OP’s article says flat out that people aren’t interested because it’s a crappy job for $19 per hr. You have to go through intense training … then you get the graveyard shift off Van Dyke Ave for $19. Raise the pay, offer tuition reimbursement, offer flexible schedules, and good people will sign up. When YOU are paying good wages and benefits to thousands of employees for their part time work then you will have room to talk.
