There is absolutely no need, at a wedding or a bar/bat mitzvah, to “cover your plate”. The amount of money spent by the hosts is up to them, they can’t expect to redeem it in gifts. It sounds like you grew up around a lot of people with more money than taste, and have unfortunately been influenced by their gauche behavior.
