you all missed my point, it isn't about high school vs club it is just not playing club the final year to enjoy life nothing to do with high school soccer. We are also glad to not pay for it.
I’m struggling to understand why your kid would play a final year of club if he no longer wants to, has no plans to play in college, and you no longer want to pay for it. The exercise and camaraderie are great, but if he has plenty of other friends the social aspect is covered, and he can get a good workout in a variety of ways. I am a bit surprised by the people claiming that their kids got burned out by soccer in HS. I know plenty of kids who dropped the sport in elementary or MS, but almost none still playing in HS who felt like quitting entirely. Keep in mind that rec soccer is excellent for kids who want a less intense experience, and all the kids I know who played in HS but did not commit to a college team have loved playing club soccer in college.
Happens across many sports: Some folks actually choose college for the academics. And it's not a surprise just by reading this forum, with all the politicking and negativity that exists in youth soccer and crazy/intense parents that some kids would have the self awareness to say this is BS. Kids quitting in HS to suck face with their bf or gf? Makes a lot of sense to HS kids I bet. I just hope their love for the game isn't gone completely that they don't pick it back up as adults for fun I have a relative who was all state in HS with D1 offers in sport but chose a different school and isn't playing anything but club at the moment. Spouse did same thing. Whether or not they regret it who can say--but regret probably isn't the right word, but they do wonder what it might have been like if they had continued playing.
I’m going to to guess that 91% of the posters on DCUM choose college for the academics, but I’m not sure how that relates to OP’s question. If you are still playing in HS, you most likely love the game, yes? College club soccer and adult rec are excellent ways to continue with the sport and meet people. My point is only that high school is not the time people typically quit a sport due to burnout.
