I didn't even think anyone needed to address the money making side of pharmaceuticals.  Of course the pharmaceutical companies are out to make a profit.  They wouldn't be in business if they didn't and we wouldn't have many of the beneficial drugs we do without them.  Why do you think there are frequent vaccine shortages?  Because there's so little profit in them.  You can't blame the companies for wanting to make a buck.  It's why they exist in the first place.   And, since you seem to like parsing, note that the OP's DH thought they were "partly" a money making scheme which would indicate he thinks they are at least partly effective.
