No way would I have gotten rid of my cats when I got married. When I adopted them from the shelter, I made a commitment to care for them for the rest of their lives-- not just to care for them until it became inconvenient. If the wife was insisting on getting NEW cats, that would be 'walking over the husband." She's just seeing through her commitment to the ones that she had prior to marrying him and I would hope that he can respect that. And all of my cats died between 14-17 years, so I doubt he has that much longer to deal with it. If I can take a birth control pill every day to save my husband and I the hassle of having a baby, then my husband can take an allergy pill to handle the hassle of a cat.
If a pill handled cat allergies, that would be great. But for many of us it does not. When you go around coughing and wheezing, you get chest infections. I had to break up with a girlfriend over a cat. Thankfully we were only one year into a relationship. It basically blew up when we moved in together, because I was wheezing daily. I would not have expected her to get rid of the cat, but then I wasn't going to marry her, either.
