A relative of ours went to a magnet and then to home HS (says she was sick of the commute but maybe she simply didn't get in, we didn't pry). Graduated with great grades and is now at a good college. And her commute really was a lot shorter. The f point on going to MS magnet is to receive more rigorous instruction in middle school; and that's all.
