Hmm...maybe because I live in a McMansion neighborhood, we're bigger targets because people think we have more disposable cash?  I get people trying to sell siding, replacement windows, they guy who "resurfaced several driveways in your neighborhood and wondered if you want your driveway resurfaced", and landscapers.  I regularly get people who do yard work or clean homes stop by to see if I would like an estimate.  Yes, when we're home, we get on average about 3-4 solicitations per week.  And that does not include the people who have been going around for politics (since we have elections next Tuesday) like vote for X or we want to tell you about proposition Y.

Our doorbell stopped working about 2 years ago and I haven't had an electrician out to fix the problem.  Instead, I bought one of those wireless doorbells for the home that the inside ringer plugs into the wall.  If the babies are asleep, I can unplug the wall unit and voila, no doorbell.  Yes, they can use the knocker, but the delivery people who do the courtesy ring, just hit the doorbell and leave, without checking if the bell actually rang or not.  If you want to disconnect your doorbell, just look for the ringer box (usually on the wall somewhere near the door), take off the cover and you can disconnect the power cable with a screwdriver.  Get one of these $15-20 wireless doorbells while your DC takes naps and do what I do.[/quote]
