A Gifted program would meet the needs of the top 5% of the kids and AAP has somewhere between 15-20% of the kids in the County. There is a very slim chance that 20% of the kids in FCPS are in the top 5% of intelligence. There is nothing wrong with AAP being for kids who are hard working and ahead as well as kids who are gifted. That is why the committee does not look at only test scores but also kids behaviors and Teachers comments. AAP is one way to differentiate between kids who are ready for a greater challenge and kids who will be fine in the gen ed classroom. There will be a large number of kids in gen ed now who will end up taking AP/IB classes in high school. [/quote]
