OP here - it's also a similar situation with my engagement ring. When we got married we had very little money and I told him I didn't want a diamond, and didn't even care if I got a ring at all. He spent $15,000 on a solitaire "because it's a good investment." (Which it is not.) At the time it really shook me because I felt like it was such an irresponsible thing to do. I've had terrible stress about money since we got married because of that. And now that (admittedly beautiful) $15K ring sits in a box in my underwear drawer.

And whoever made that comment about disposable income and daycare - I work both because I have to and because I like to. But our kid goes to daycare because it's what is best for him. My husband's business had a good year but there is so much else to spend money on right now. [/quote]
