Most people I know have propane ones, us included. They are wonderful. I have never experienced lava rocks exploding or other hazards that people mention. The propane only cuts out if your tank is empty. I am getting ready to replace our lava rocks with fire glass stones because I like the look.
Literally everybody I know has wood burning firepits. Propane is for the souless.
Interesting. Everyone I know must be soulless. Everyone I know has propane. I will say that wood burning is much cheaper to purchase. We a have a rectangular steel one (6' x 3' x 18") that puts out 75,000 BTU. It's very warm, nothing explodes or sputters. And nobody has to shower after sitting by it.
