Results matter less than a lot of things.

It's Metro United. Not Manchester United.

The people I know who are involved with Metro United are terrific. I do wonder how such a geographically awkward partnership will work out in the long run. I can't imagine a lot of people traveling from D.C. or Potomac to Great Falls at rush hour, and I wonder if Herndon or Vienna would be better partners. (Disclaimer: I live in Vienna, coached in rec league, ref there, etc.)

1. Development. Would you rather win at U-17 or U-12? Would you rather be a U-10 stud or play in college?

2. Fun. It's a game. I bet half of the miserable U-10 girls I saw in some "high-level" WAGS games quit before high school.

That's all very well and I agree.  But - in my experience

1.  Development leads to wins.  Not immediately I agree - and good coaches who stick to development as a goal will indeed lose some games that they might perhaps have won if they didn't stick to their plan.  But the development should lead to visibly improved performance within weeks, and improved results within months.  At any age.  I would argue that teams which consistently lose for years are not benefitting from development.  They're just losing.

2.  Teams which lose consistently are not fun for the kids.  Sure it's not necessary to win all your games to have fun.  But it is necessary to not always finish last.

3.  I agree entirely.  But - in my experience - psychopath coaches usually don't win - their behavior is self-defeating.

True, and I've seen some teams that are just beating their head against a wall. All things in moderation.

Though to take it back to the original point -- is the "coaching style" the problem, or are they struggling to attract players in an area with some solid ECNL clubs?

I just checked their results -- they're not at the bottom of every age group. Two of them, yes. No team is in the top half, but neither are they all in last place.

And the OP was completely wrong about the teams in VPL (ECNL regional). The U-12s are unbeaten. The U-15s have beaten everyone except Vienna. The U-14s have beaten everyone except VSA.

It's ironic that people on a message board, like the OP, think we don't have Internet access.

Metro United has good coaching. They don’t do as well due to the amount of competing ECNL and GA girls clubs. I’d like to see their coaching staff take over Loudoun’s ECNL teams and also combine those kids. They’d then give McLean and Bethesda good competition in this area’s girls ECNL. Location is amenable to this too as GF/Reston is close to eastern Loudoun. [/quote]
