I wish he would just effing call it! Just say that we aren’t going back to in person until March. Let the teachers focus on making distance learning better. Let the administrators focus on supporting the teachers. And let us parents move on with our lives without having to constantly make hypothetical plans about childcare and tutors and work schedules. The longer he drags this out, the more angry parents will be. I chose hybrid for my kids but it’s clear to me that it’s not gonna happen.
+1. At least for 4-12. I see the case for trying to get PK-3 back sooner. Wish they’d JUST focus on that.
I am REALLY upset that APS is thinking of 3rd with 4-5 instead of 3rd with pk-2nd. In most years the 3rd graders are in a better spot. My 3rd graders can't read. When I talked to the school they said this was basically true of 1/2 the 3rd grade b/c of the shut down of 2nd grade last year and the ceasing of instruction and intervention.
50% for 3rd grade can't read? Is it typical that 50% of kids can't read in 2nd grade? (note I do have a 3rd grader, but this is not an issue for us, so I never thought about it).
I am not PP, but your comment reads as extremely rude.
I'm the PP who made the comment about the number of 3rd graders who can't read. To be clear when I say 'can't read' I don't mean 'can't sound out a single word' but I do mean can't sit by themselves, read a grade level book and absorb the content. 3rd grade is supposed to be the transition between learning to read and reading to learn. It's not uncommon that kids who are part way through 2nd grade can't do this- but the school typically realizes there is a problem and starts/ continues significant intervention, gets kids reading by the end of second grade, refers for summer school those that aren't, etc. But this year school shut down- so the 2nd graders didn't get the sig intervention, didn't get referred for summer school etc. Yes in the DL environment the teachers are acting as if the kids can read- like most 3rd graders. So those that can't are falling further and further behind while those that can read well and moving forward. It is a serious serious problem. But the numbers of kids who are falling into this category are high enough, and the DL environment hard enough- that at least for us we are not getting massive intervention.
Okay yes I understand. I had wrongly thought you meant can't read at all so I was confused. But yes I did hear that 3rd is when they switch from learning to read to reading to learn and missing half of 2nd grade gas to be a huge setback.
I have a third grader and first grader. I share the concern about kids going without interventions they would have been screened for or received at school. In general, though- kids Will have been promoted to a higher grade, and thus will be lower on the priority list for return to school, but I’m not sure anyone is actually completing the work they need to to be capable of working independently. I’m particularly concerned about it if we start next year in a hybrid/DL model. I feel like the implicit assumption is that kids in 4th and 2nd grade (which will be my kids next year) are more capable than younger kids re DL. The longer this goes on, the more I’m pretty sure that’s not going to be true for this group of kids.
