No big deal for experienced cold weather campers and if you have the appropriate gear. Sub zero sleeping bags, sleeping pads etc. Otherwise, a pretty miserable experience.
A 40 degree low is not cold weather camping. Obviously it's cold if you don't have decent gear, meaning decent sleeping bags and pads. You're going to want to be a warm-ish clothes overnight, including warm socks and probably hats. Be prepared to co-sleep, particularly if the 3 year old isn't comfortable. I don't get why people are making a big deal of this. Anything over freezing really isn't that cold. If you go, I bet you end up over-doing it and you'll find yourself sweating when you go to bed. (Admittedly, that is a problem no matter what, since you'll either be hot when you go to bed, or you'll wake up rather chilly in the middle of the night).
