Both children know gun safety as PP mentioned (#1 - leave the area and tell an adult). Both have shot BB guns (cub scouts) and older has shot rifle and shotgun (Boy Scouts). My husband and I volunteer with scouts, and he ensures the children are taught safety first.
I don’t trust most people with guns. The OP strikes me as a nut. No training. They would accidentally shoot bystanders if they ever tried to “defend” their home. 
Even though I am retired military with extensive training, I don’t trust I have the skills to use a gun in a crowd. Too many moving people and chance to do more harm than good. A home invader? Yes.
