So we were one of the "crazy" families with a kid who played in NJ this weekend. We have been very conservative throughout the quarantine, shopping only once per week, not socializing at all except in the socially distanced backyard meetups with close family members who are also being very strict. We have not had haircuts and don't go to places like Home Depot. My kids have been practicing soccer since Maryland lifted the ban. I thought long and hard about whether they should go back, but ultimately decided that outdoor soccer, where the close contact with any one individual for any length of time is limited, is not that risky. There might be some risk, but on the other hand, the at home workouts they were doing at the beginning of quarantine have not been happening. They needed some physical outlet outside of the house and soccer is what they love doing. We did not stay in hotel, but drove up and back for the games. The games were scheduled virtually back to back, so there was only a limited group of teams and spectators on the field and in the field area at any one time. Parents and players waited in their vehicles until shortly before game time. Before each game, the players and coaches had temperature checks and then proceeded to the field. Parents stayed in the car and then were socially distanced on the sidelines, all wearing masks. The players distanced and wore masks when not in the game. It was not like a regular tournament with many people coming and going. My son changed out of his jersey before getting into the car. Then they drove home. Obviously, there is risk with any activity. However, when we committed to this, which was weeks ago, things were looking fairly good COVID-wise. NJ actually has a lower positivity rate than MD, or at least they did when we committed. Obviously the event was not risk free, but it was an outdoor activity, exercise, and some much needed socialization for kids, some of whom like mine, went more than three months without any in person socialization with peers. You can disagree, but my husband felt it was lower risk than our community pool, because the number of people was very limited and distancing was enforced.
Excellent information. Knowing this, would you travel and stay in a hotel however?
