I know a few people like this - people who really want to tell jokes but suck at it. I suspect something like Aspergers. They recognize the shape of a joke but at some deep level don't really understand what makes something funny versus mean versus awkward. [/quote]

Sounds like he may have Asperger’s.  Maybe it is not so bad that you recognize it as being on the spectrum, but just bad enough to find it “weird.”  More examples would help people provide some feedback. [/quote]

OP here. I see that he has several symptom's of asperger's. He's sensitive to sound and he takes an intense interest in only a limited of things. 
He's also a math genius.
