There were five of us kids in our family, so we didn't get cars, of course. It used to be sort of a rite of passage years ago for upper middle class families in the suburbs to get their kids a car. That bit of consumerism has faded in recent years. Here in the DC area I see it happen but, like the PP says, it's less common and is driven by family logistics.
