So, yes, if I were doing it today I would research the counselors in the area and try to hire the best one that I could afford.  There is just so much to learn.  Unless you are willing to read the top 10 books out there on college admissions, you are better off trying to find an expert who can spend some time with your child ferreting out his interests, ECs, skills, special qualities and possible interesting essay topics.
