So you get to your lake house and stay there for two week and have food delivered? Hardly a hardship. Beaches I guess are a little harder but no one swims in the Atlantic that far north until late Aug
OP here. We rented a house on a lake in a really secluded area. But we'd like to be able to go hiking in Acadia too. Honestly, I think we will go anyway. We'll bring food, get some groceries delivered, spend most of our time at the lake house but occasionally go into Acadia National Park. I doubt anyone will notice or care.
Hawaii has arrested people for breaking a similar quarantine. I wouldn’t be surprised if they enforce it. Otherwise, they get the worst of all worlds. They hurt their tourism badly because most people will stay away, but they will still have a decent bit of spread from people like you who think the rules don’t apply to them. Either have and enforce the quarantine to try to really stop the spread, or let the economy function.
They can't. They even admit this in a bunch of articles I read.
They could, if they want. They could station someone at the entrance to Acadia, for example, I ask you to provide a declaration stating when you entered the state. It would be quite easy to see if someone lied and then prosecute for perjury, in addition to breaking the quarantine. This would take some man power, but it would be completely feasible to implement if they wanted.
And...you actually think this is something they want to spend money on? That they *should* spend money on at this time? It's not the plague. You're being really ridiculous for some reason. Why do you want people to avoid Maine?
I couldn't care less if people visit Maine. (Might this discussion be hurting your rental income?) You seem to be arguing that the quarantine period is unnecessary. Maybe it is. That really is irrelevant for the argument I am making. Maine would not need to spend all that much money to enforce the quarantine and, with fines, it might even be revenue neutral. They would simply have to prosecute/fine a handful of people early in the season and make sure that these cases got lots of publicity. That would be enough to scare most people away from violating the quarantine. Will they do this? I don't know. Should they do this? Again, I am not arguing one way or another. But, if they want to have the quarantine mean something, they could do it relatively easily and with relatively minimal expenditures.
