Sucks he was given no other choice. The need to have more non lethal options available for officers, but the cop didn't do anything wrong here.
Of course he had a choice. He could’ve chosen not to shoot that man. Why did the cop stand his ground? He could’ve backed away, he could’ve put his cruiser in between him and his victim. He could’ve waited for back up. He could’ve done any number of things that didn’t involve shooting that man.
Police have no duty to retreat. To the contrary, they have a sworn duty to be the ones who stand in the face of danger. The guy was significantly further away than the textbook “21 feet” when he began his charge but still was almost on top of the officer when he fell, despite being shot five times. This is one of the most clearly justified shootings I have seen of the many that make the news. No less-lethal weapon that exists could have prevented this, except perhaps a beanbag gun, and those have to be deployed with deadly force backup and can themselves kill people. As for a lifetime of therapy, the cop has been on the job for 17 years and doubtless has seen a lot. In a case like this, the result was not a happy one, but it was hardly the sort of situation to induce soul-searing guilt and trauma in a reasonably well adjusted police officer.
