At the end of the day the highest responsibility lies on the the individual to protect themselves. Walkers need to walk places that keep them safe, not necessarily where they are or aren't allowed. Rules are a guide not a shield Drivers should watch out for stuff they don't want to hit but if they don't, the stuff needs to watch out for their own ass. Because you're the one who will pay. Let your kids play in the road in AU park all you want, sure the driver might get some time but you'll lose a loved one.
No, that's not how it works. At the end of the day, the highest responsibility lies on the individual with a state-issued license to drive a two-ton motor vehicle that can go at high speeds, to not injure or kill people. If you are unable to not injure or kill people while you're driving, you should not be allowed to drive. Do I do what I can to reduce the chances of a driver running me over, while I'm walking? I sure do. Is it your responsibility (while driving) to not run me over, while I'm walking? Yes.
You sound like my son. I always tell him that I will put that on his grave that he was correct about the crosswalk or whatever other argument he has where he knows that he is 'right'. The other poster you are replying to is correct. You have a responsibility to look out for yourself. Do not rely on others to 'follow the rules'. I LOVE the new HAWK crossing lights being installed around the city now. Do I still look both ways when they are active before stepping into the street. Yes. Do I ensure that I am in the HAWK crosswalk, Yes. Do I not cross when they are blinking and about to turn off, Yes. Would I be right if I was killed in the HAWK crosswalk, Yes. Would I be dead, Yes.
. Is ANYBODY telling people not to look both ways before crossing the street? No. Nobody is telling people that.
