How did you get to calculus in HS from algebra 1 in 9th grade? My DS is in algebra 1 in 9th grade (the majority of 9th graders take algebra 1). Next year, he will take geometry and then algebra 2 in 11th and then pre-calc in 12th. [/quote]

Forgot to add that all incoming 9th graders have to take an algebra 1 placement test. It must be pretty hard because all of the kids who took algebra 1 in 8th grade didn’t pass. Only a few kids who took it in 7th grade passed. Many of them didn’t pass the geometry placement test. I wonder what would happen if all public schools made incoming 9th graders take an algebra 1 test. [/quote]
+1.  My kids' private school is like this - very hard placement tests.  (And hard grading in math classes, harder than for my other kid in public school.)  Personally, I think the combo of placement and grading do not put the students in the best light for college admissions.  The school does ok with HYPS with a handful each year, but not all top colleges recognize their adamant toughness with placement and grading, even though the high school is somewhat selective.  Hence our sending the next kid to free public school instead...[/quote]
