The USSF (US Soccer) runs the US Youth National Teams They are responsible for scouting the USA for players to roster on these teams. The scouting is done by a wide range of people who make recommendations. Most of the scouts are also youth coaches.

The local kids who get recommended (mostly by club coaches/staff) go to local "NTC's". These NTC are local centers that are taking place on a National level (Throughout America).

So, every year, thousand of kids go to local NTC's were they are pooled together and seen by scouts. Of those 1000 of kids nationally being seen, about 20 or so are called (picked) into a real Youth National team camp where the best players compete for roster spots on a Youth National Team.

The chance of getting called into in a camp is 1 percent.

It's more like 180 kids are initially called from the 600-1000 at the NTCs. These 180 are called into regional mini-camps. 60 kids each for the West, Central and East camps. If you make it to this level, the regional mini camps lists are published on www.ussoccer.com and college coaches come calling.

From this 180 it then gets narrowed down to 60 for the national camp and then ultimately 20 are selected for the YNT.[/quote]
